Taiyo Yuden Achieves Mass Production of 1005-Sized High-Capacitance MLC
Introduction
Recently, Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Taiyo Yuden") announced that it has commercialized and commenced mass production of the world’s first embedded multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) with a size of 1005 (1.0×0.5mm) and a capacitance of 22μF. Designed specifically for decoupling IC power lines in AI servers and other high-performance information devices, this product marks another major technological breakthrough for Taiyo Yuden in the electronic components industry.
Technical and Application Value
In AI servers and other information processing equipment, ICs consume massive amounts of power, which places stringent requirements on power line decoupling. On one hand, compact yet high-capacitance MLCCs are essential to handle large currents; on the other hand, minimizing power loss and noise requires placing power circuits as close to the IC as possible. While traditional designs locate capacitors around the IC, embedded MLCCs can be mounted beneath the IC or on the backside of the substrate, delivering superior electrical performance.
By enhancing its electrode formation technology and other critical processes, Taiyo Yuden successfully overcame the challenge of balancing high-capacitance with precise connectivity. It is the first to achieve 22μF in the compact 1005 size, and the product has been in mass production at its Tamamura plant since August 2025, filling a major gap in the global market.
Corporate Development and Strategy
Founded in 1950, Taiyo Yuden is listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and has long emphasized material development as its core driver. Its product portfolio includes capacitors, inductors, RF devices (FBAR/SAW), and aluminum electrolytic capacitors, which are widely used in smartphones, tablets, automobiles, information infrastructure, and industrial equipment. Research and development remain the cornerstone of the company’s growth, enabling continuous product innovation and business expansion.
In China, Taiyo Yuden established Taiyo Yuden (Changzhou) Electronics Co., Ltd. in 2019 with a capital investment of USD 200 million and a site area of 28,500 square meters. The plant officially began production in 2023. As the company’s first overseas production site in 20 years, the Changzhou facility is being developed in three phases. Phase I involves an investment of USD 600 million and focuses on manufacturing high-quality MLCCs for electric vehicles, with an expected annual output value of RMB 1 billion. Through such strategic expansion, Taiyo Yuden has secured its position among the world’s top three MLCC manufacturers, with annual sales exceeding RMB 12 billion.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Taiyo Yuden will continue to strengthen its R&D efforts in MLCC technology, aiming for even higher capacitance and performance levels. The company is committed to supporting the development of the global electronics industry and advancing innovation in AI servers and other cutting-edge information devices.
